About
My work deals with the elemental in nature. I am not seeking simply to depict abstractions of landscape, seascape and sky. While these may take on a degree of solidity in the work, it is the elusive and shifting quality of light that I am trying to capture. My challenge is to give the seen and the unseen equal weight.
Through a process of layering, images may dissolve, be refracted or absorbed, leaving traces or hints of things passing or coming into being. The works undergo transformation as pieces are added or subtracted. By employing a multiplicity of materials, which may include film, water-based crayons, oil pastels, coloured pencil, graphite and oil paint, and applying techniques of traditional painting and drawing, I seek to build up an imagery that is recognisable at one level and yet dream-like at another.
Crossing these opaque or translucent surfaces are often stark lines of colour or darkness, intersecting, meeting, abruptly disappearing. Impactful as they may be these are not intended to be dominant. They are merely sharp-edged borders and horizons with apparent destinies that lance through or oppose the more enduring ethereal surfaces and sub-surfaces.
My work is intensely personal. It is a reflection of subconscious and conscious mind operating simultaneously. Sometimes jarring but more often simply sliding along one another on different planes. Despite the divergency of techniques, colours and materials, the intention is to achieve a refinement and balance in the works.
